Description

Head of Strategy; Supply Chain Coordination Limited (SCCL) – management function of NHS Supply Chain;

London or Nottingham ;

Competitive salary + package

The core aim of SCCL is to leverage the scale of the NHS to drive savings in the procurement and use of medical and non-medical products and allow the Trusts to reallocate money to frontline care and ultimately the patient. SCCL are well progressed on thier journey to deliver £2.4bn in savings by providing a standardised range of quality assured clinical products that meet the needs of the NHS across all areas.  More broadly than savings, SCCL operates a national, diverse supply chain, where resilience is paramount; a range of clinical services from driving product innovation to supporting patient and clinical outcomes; and they have an ambitious and critical role to play in delivering the NHS net zero commitment in 2045 as well as social value ambitions.

Since its inception in 2018, SCCL has grown rapidly and seen strong commercial success, growing market share from 40 – 56% (as at March 2020). In addition to the organisation being on a steep growth trajectory, it is also undergoing a transformation of its core technology solutions and enhancing its logistics capacity.  Looking to the future, exciting digital and data agendas will help to create greater supply chain integration across the NHS, as well as drive greater value and efficiency through insight.

The NHS has played a hugely critical part over the last 12 months as the nation has been struggling with the effect of a pandemic unseen by our generation. At the same time, the NHS is evolving from the traditional payer and provider model to more of an Integrated Care System that includes Social Care. This role will give you an opportunity to support our NHS at this most critical point.

The Role

Reporting to the Strategy & Corporate Communications Director and playing a key role within the Senior Leadership Team of NHS Supply Chain, you would be responsible for defining and implementing the future strategy of the organisation, defining the annual plans required to enable the strategy, and tracking and driving business performance to meet those objectives.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Defining and evolving the Corporate Strategy of the organisation, in line with the Long-Term Plan of the NHS, and in close collaboration with the Board, Executive and Senior Leadership team of both NHS Supply Chain, and NHS England and NHS Improvement
  • Developing the annual business plan and annual corporate KPIs, including the creation of the full business plan document, and target setting for the organisation, working closely with colleagues across the business
  • Managing the ongoing use of the OGSM methodology (Objectives, Goals, Strategies and Measures), to support individual functions to have clear annual plans, aligned with those of the organisation, and to execute against them
  • Owning the operating model for the business, and defining major and minor changes to that to reflect natural evolution e.g. to reflect the transition to ICSs or more material changes that may be realised at the conclusion of each business cycle, usually 5 years
  • Leading specific strategic projects, in collaboration with functions across the business, which may range from market entry strategies, market growth strategies, to supporting the changes required in the organisation for working with the wider health and care system such as the Integrated Care Systems.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate would combine strategy training (for example gained in a consultancy organisation or through training), with experience putting those skills into practise within a large organisation.  An ability to get to the right answer, and balance that with bringing the organisation with you to deliver the change will be needed to be successful in the role.  Ideally, the candidate will bring experience working in both the private sector and with exposure to healthcare.

More broadly, the skills and experience required by the role include:

  • Experience in developing corporate and functional strategies, a strong grounding in the methods and approaches for developing those. An understanding of how to subsequently take forwards those changes and implement them would be beneficial.
  • Knowledge of how to develop operating models, and how to implement changes to the operating model of the organisation with demonstratable evidence of driving business performance outcomes, and establishing evidence-based targets
  • An understanding of the healthcare industry, having worked with or within the NHS or affiliated industry or experience working in a similar role within an organisation with a large complex supply chain.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills – an ability to simplify key messages and ensure a good understanding of the strategy; an ability to bring other parts of the business together to align behind a single vision.
